Darien Cohn’s bat mitzvah at the Westminster Hotel gave her 200 guests another welcome taste of summertime in November, as she and her party planner Beth Fink of Beth Fink Events transformed the venue into a Coney Island feel for the teen’s ‘Cohny Island’-themed celebration.
Beth Fink says that Darien had several special requests for her big day. “Darien wanted an entrance video playing on two plasma screens right before she was introduced to the party. The video was created with her family and friends to the song Ready or Not by Bridgit Mendler, and it played as she entered the room. She also wanted to make sure the party never stopped and that the dance floor was always packed.”
To start off the party, the adult cocktail hour was held in our specious Victoria Hall. The guests entered the room to find an oversized “Welcome to Cohny island” postcard hanging from the ceiling, creating a fun entrance way into the cocktail hour, where guests could mingle at the custom-created four-sided bar in the middle of the room
The kids’ cocktail hour was held in Ballroom A with boardwalk games in a big tent including ring toss, bean bag toss and skee ball. There was also a Coney Island-style photobooth for the kids and adults to take hundereds of pictures on photo strips.
Included in the cocktail hour menu, was a boardwalk-style 3-foot Philly Cheesesteak carving station, with sautéed onions and peppers, plus potato knishes and soft baked pretzels.
After the kids’ cocktail hour was over, the dividing wall moved away and the cocktail hour space became part of the large ballroom where the custom logo-accented dance floor welcomed guests and set the stage for the presentations and dancing to come.
Among the fun details of the celebration were place cards made with sticks of taffy with the guests’ name and table number on them. The sticks were displayed in a fun Coney Island scene with details like Nathan’s hot dogs, a roller coaster, tickets, and a sign with Darien’s Cohny Island logo. To bring the Coney Island theme to the adult tables, the centerpieces were “Cohny Island” photo strips with pictures of Darien displayed on large vases filled with popcorn and boardwalk tickets.
Fink says, “For dinner, we kept it with what the Glazier Group does Best: a Steak House Style Dinner with family style sides including their creamed spinach and their famous ripped potatoes.” Desserts featured Strip House chocolate cake and cheesecake served at the tables, as well as server-passed desserts including mini ice cream sandwiches, vanilla Silk shakes with chocolate chip cookies, chocolate dipped strawberries and mini cream puffs brought to guests on the dance floor and enjoying the bat mitzvah venue.
Robbie from Pure Energy was the MC for for this party and kept the dance floor packed all evening. Darien and her Dad worked on a choreographed dance for the father daughter dance which made the guests laugh, cry and get on the dance floor.
Party favors were sweatpants with the Cohny Island logo given out in large popcorn buckets.
Fink says that Darien and her family chose Westminster Hotel as their bat mitzvah venue because they dine at the Strip House all the time, and it was important to them that they would have great food for their guests. They also had some out of towners that would need hotel rooms and wanted to make it easy for those guests.
We’re so pleased to have played a part in such an important day for Darien and her family, and we thank them, Ivan Piedra Photography, and their event planner Beth Fink for sharing details of the party with us!
